During a July 2020 Instagram Live episode of her Pretend Cooking Show, Jennifer Garner made the cornbread she grew up on while her mom, Patricia, coached her by phone. Pat teased her for greasing the pan with olive oil, was surprised she had no buttermilk in the house and, when asked how long to bake it, simply said to bake it until it is brown. It is a plain Southern style cornbread with very little sugar, baked in a hot greased pan so the edges turn crisp..

You will need: 2 tablespoons vegetable oil, 3/4 cup cornmeal, 1/4 cup all purpose flour, 1 rounded teaspoon baking powder, 1/4 teaspoon baking soda, 1 tablespoon sugar, 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1 egg, 1 cup buttermilk, butter to serve.

How to make it: 1. Heat the oven to 425F and put the oil in an 8 inch skillet or pan to heat. 2. Whisk the cornmeal, flour, baking powder, baking soda, sugar and salt. 3. Beat the egg with the buttermilk and stir it in just until combined. 4. Pour the batter into the hot oiled pan. 5. Bake 18 to 22 minutes, until golden brown, and serve warm with butter.

In June 2024 Garner and her mom filmed a second family favorite: a creamy skillet corn her children call Grandmom Corn. Pat adapted the recipe from an old neighbor and showed her daughter the trick that makes it so tender: cut off only the tips of the kernels, then scrape the cob to get the sweet milky pulp. Garner said it tastes like summer and admitted she makes her version without sugar. Like the best celebrity mom recipes, it needs only fresh sweet corn, a little butter and a splash of milk.

You will need: 6 ears fresh sweet corn, 3 tablespoons butter, 1/4 cup milk or cream, 1 teaspoon sugar optional, salt and pepper.

How to make it: 1. Slice just the tips of the kernels off each cob into a wide bowl. 2. Scrape the cobs with the back of the knife to collect the milky pulp. 3. Melt the butter in a skillet over medium heat. 4. Add the corn, pulp and milk and stir often for 10 to 15 minutes until thick and creamy. 5. Season with salt, pepper and sugar if you like.

Martha Stewart’s mother, Martha Kostyra, appeared in more than 40 segments of her daughter’s television shows, and her potato pierogi became one of the best known celebrity mom recipes. When she died in 2007, Stewart shared the family recipe, which makes about 60 dumplings. The dough is soft and tender thanks to sour cream, and the filling is mashed potato with butter, cheddar and cream cheese. Stewart noted that pierogi were traditionally a meatless dish for Lent before they became a favorite side dish.

Place a small ball of filling on each, fold into a half moon and pinch firmly to seal. 5. Boil in batches until they float, cook 1 minute more and serve with melted butter.

Dolly Parton grew up as one of 12 children in the Tennessee mountains, and she has told People that her mother, Avie Lee, turned lean times into a family tradition with stone soup. The children would pick out a stone, wash it and drop it into the pot, then everyone helped add whatever the garden and pantry had, usually potatoes, vegetables and a ham hock for flavor. The stone did not add much, but it made the little ones feel part of supper. Today you can skip the stone and keep the love.

You will need: 1 smoked ham hock, 8 cups water, 1 onion, 3 carrots, 2 celery ribs, 4 potatoes, 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes, 2 cups chopped cabbage, 1 cup green beans, 1 cup corn, 1 bay leaf, salt and pepper.

How to make it: 1. Simmer the ham hock in the water with the bay leaf for 1 hour. 2. Add the chopped onion, carrots, celery and potatoes and simmer 20 minutes. 3. Stir in the tomatoes, cabbage, green beans and corn and cook 15 minutes more. 4. Pull the meat off the ham hock, chop it and return it to the pot. 5. Season with salt and pepper and serve with cornbread.

Stir in the oil, plant milk and vanilla until smooth and thick. 4. Fold in the chocolate chips and spread in the pan. 5. Bake 25 to 30 minutes until the top is set and cool before cutting.
